A sportswriter for The Associated Press for nearly 20 years, Richard “Dick” Joyce died in 1988 at the age of 53. The Brooklyn, New York, native specialized in covering horse racing and college basketball for the AP, as well as acting as supervising editor on the sports desk. Joyce joined the AP’s broadcast department in July 1968 and moved to the sports department within a year. Prior to his tenure with the AP, Joyce worked at United Press International, NBC and The New York World Telegram & Sun.
Before graduating from St. Bonaventure in 1960, Joyce, who was well known for his “Tomahawk” column, spent three semesters as sports editor of The Bona Venture, the campus weekly newspaper. Joyce is remembered as a gentle giant, an impeccable writer with a keen news sense and a compassionate, dedicated professional.
